COVID-19 Impact on Small Business
One in five businesses in Minnesota will permanently close if the economy doesn’t improve sooner rather than later, according to a recent survey. Of those surveyed, 44% of small businesses in the state said they would apply or reapply for another PPP loan to help them stay afloat.
Even so, the third wave of Covid-19 is well underway across the country. The Midwest is being hit especially hard. Cases continue to climb, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies. In response, Minnesota and other states have again issued stay-at-home orders in an effort to keep case numbers down and create space in hospital emergency rooms. Gov. Tim Walz has said that restaurants cannot currently offer dine-in service. Bars are closed. People are being asked to limit their shopping trips and to only go out for the necessities.
There is no doubt most businesses are affected at least in some way – especially companies and service providers who can’t work remotely. Restaurants, for example, can offer delivery or curbside services, but there is no question they are losing revenue. Retail stores also see impact, with capacity restrictions.
Our Edina law firm can help assist businesses clients with a wide range of regulatory, transactional, and litigation issues related to COVID-19. Business insurance, government assistance, and PPP loans cannot make up for all lost revenue, and there are rules surrounding each.
We advise our clients on both short-term responses and long-term strategies for dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their businesses, including the CARES Act, debt relief, Chapter 11 bankruptcy, landlord-tenant rights, litigation, insurance, and more. Reach out to our skilled business attorney today to discuss the best option for you – and the future of your Minnesota business.
