Medical Errors: Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.

Studies have shown that medical errors is the third leading cause of early death in the United States behind cancer and heart disease. According to Johns Hopkins, at least 250,000 people die of medical errors every year. Even more patients are injured at the hands of a doctor or someone else who was negligent in caring for their patients.

Such deaths and injuries are typically caused by unqualified staff, an error in judgment, a computer breakdown, medication mix-up, or surgical complication that has lasting physical and emotional effects.

For example, one of our clients had gone in for her annual pap smear in February 2020. Suspicious cells were detected. Her healthcare provider recommended she undergo a conscopy, a painful procedure that allows doctors to examine the cervix. A portion of the woman’s cervix was removed and biopsied. After, she was told she had cervical cancer and needed to have a colonization as well as a hysterectomy.

Ultimately, the woman visited the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion, where doctors found that the original biopsy showed zero cancer. The damage was already done, however, as the client had to undergo another painful procedure to remove scar tissue the first procedure had caused. The scar tissue was blocking the woman’s uterus.

What’s more, she had to live for months with the fear and emotional distress of a cancer diagnosis.. We are taking the responsible clinic and doctor to task.
